“Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini.”
“My strength is not as an individual, but as a collective.”
This testimony has been a long time coming.
Far longer than it should have been.
Not because Butterfly Compassion Community was ever forgotten.
Quite the opposite.
The truth is that every time I sat down to write this testimony, I became overwhelmed by the sheer scale of what I was trying to put into words.
How do you adequately honour an organisation that has become woven into the stories of hundreds of people?
How do you genuinely capture the impact of a community that quietly and consistently shows up for people experiencing some of the most difficult seasons of their lives?
How do you thank an organisation that has helped restore dignity, hope, warmth, safety, belonging, confidence, joy, stability, and humanity to countless whānau, tamariki, rangatahi, parents, grandparents, and individuals throughout our community?
How do you adequately describe a partnership that has fundamentally strengthened my ability as a social worker to support the people I have the privilege of walking alongside every day?
The answer is simple.
You probably can’t.
Not completely.
Because the true impact of Butterfly Compassion Community cannot be measured in boxes packed, blankets donated, beds delivered, clothing distributed, referrals completed, or emails answered.
The true impact of Butterfly Compassion Community lives in people.
It lives in stories.
It lives in tears.
It lives in smiles.
It lives in moments of relief.
It lives in restored dignity.
It lives in hope.
And it lives in every person who has ever walked away from your organisation feeling seen, valued, loved, and supported.
Today, I want to attempt to honour that legacy.
🦋💜 MORE THAN AN ORGANISATION
Butterfly Compassion Community is often described as a charitable organisation.
Personally, I think that description is far too small.
Charities give things.
Butterfly Compassion Community gives hope.
Charities distribute resources.
Butterfly Compassion Community restores dignity.
Charities provide assistance.
Butterfly Compassion Community creates belonging.
Charities respond to need.
Butterfly Compassion Community responds with aroha.
That distinction matters.
Because throughout every interaction I have had with your team, one thing has remained consistently evident:
You do not simply provide support.
You provide humanity.
And those two things are not the same.
🦋💜 A PARTNERSHIP THAT HAS CHANGED LIVES
As a social worker, I am often invited into people’s lives during their most vulnerable moments.
I meet people who are carrying burdens most of us cannot imagine.
I sit alongside parents who are terrified they cannot provide for their children.
I work with grandparents who have stepped up to raise mokopuna despite facing enormous financial pressures.
I meet rangatahi who have escaped violence.
Young people who have left unsafe homes.
Families who have experienced homelessness.
Single mothers trying to hold everything together.
Single fathers are trying to create opportunities for their children.
Families navigating grief.
Families preparing for tangihanga.
Parents welcoming newborn babies without the essentials they need.
Children sleeping on floors.
Young people leaving home with nothing.
Families moving into completely empty houses.
People living in vehicles.
People surviving week-to-week.
People who have endured trauma, loss, hardship, poverty, abuse, neglect, and unimaginable challenges.
And through all those stories…
One name continues to appear.
Again.
And again.
And again.
And again.
Butterfly Compassion Community.
Not as a distant organisation.
Not as a service provider.
But as a trusted partner.
A collaborator.
A supporter.
A safety net.
A source of hope.
A source of dignity.
A source of kindness.
A source of practical assistance when practical assistance is desperately needed.
And a source of emotional reassurance when people have forgotten that their community cares.
🦋💜 YOU HAVE HELPED IN WAYS TOO NUMEROUS TO COUNT
When I reflect upon our partnership together, I struggle to think of a single area of need that Butterfly Compassion Community has not attempted to support.
Over my time working with you all, you have helped with:
Beds
Bed bases
Mattresses
Trundler beds
Sofa beds
Baby cots
Clothing
Shoes
Winter jackets
Blankets
Bedding
Duvets
Sheets
Pillows
Towels
Household linen
Cups
Glasses
Kitchenware
Toiletries
Shampoo
Soap
Sanitary products
Nappies
Baby wipes
Sensory toys
Sensory packs
Birthday gifts
Christmas presents
School packs
Swimming packs
Sports packs
Hockey equipment
Netball equipment
School supplies
Camping equipment
Tent gear
Bedding for homeless individuals
Resources for independent living
Clothing for rangatahi
Clothing for grandparents
Clothing for babies
Clothing for the entire whānau
Support for emergency accommodation
Support during bereavement
Support during tangihanga
Support during housing transitions
Support for families fleeing violence
Support for families facing hardship
Support for young people leaving unsafe homes
Support for newborn babies
Support for single parents
Support for grandparents raising mokopuna
Support for children starting school
Support for families moving into Kāinga Ora housing
Support for homeless individuals living in vehicles
Support for people rebuilding their lives after a crisis
And perhaps most remarkably…
You have done all this while maintaining the same level of care, respect, humility, and compassion every single time.
🦋💜 YOU NEVER ASK “WHY”
You ask:
“How can we help?”
That difference is profound.
Many people who require support already feel whakamā.
Many already carry shame.
Many already feel judged.
Many have spent years being told what they are doing wrong.
Then they encounter Butterfly Compassion Community.
And instead of interrogation.
They encounter compassion.
Instead of judgment.
They encounter empathy.
Instead of barriers.
They encounter solutions.
Instead of bureaucracy.
They encounter people.
People who care.
People who listen.
People who believe they deserve dignity.
That changes lives.
🦋💜 YOU SEE THE HUMAN BEING
One thing I admire most about Butterfly Compassion Community is that you consistently look beyond requests and see people.
When someone requests a blanket…
You see a family needing warmth.
When someone asks for a birthday gift…
You see a child deserving joy.
When someone needs a bed…
You see a person deserving rest.
When someone requests toiletries…
You see somebody deserving dignity.
When someone asks for school supplies…
You see potential.
When somebody needs support for a newborn…
You see a family deserving hope.
You always manage to see the person behind the request.
And that is one of your greatest gifts.
🦋💜 THE STORIES I WILL NEVER FORGET
Over the time I have worked with you all, there have been countless moments that remain etched in my memory.
I remember the grandparents overwhelmed with gratitude because they could finally provide warmth for their mokopuna.
I remember mothers crying because their children would receive Christmas presents.
I remember young people receiving belongings as they transitioned toward independence.
I remember children smiling because somebody had remembered their birthday.
I remember whānau receiving winter packs and feeling genuinely cared for.
I remember parents who had been carrying enormous stress finally exhaling because essential household items had been provided.
I remember a whānau receiving support after losing a loved one and feeling less alone during tangihanga.
I remember babies receiving cots.
Families receiving beds.
Homeless individuals receiving practical support.
Children receiving school resources.
Young people receiving sports equipment.
Families receiving clothing.
Whānau receiving bedding.
Grandparents receiving help.
Single parents receiving relief.
Again and again and again.
Moments of kindness.
Moments of dignity.
Moments of hope.
🦋💜 THE BUTTERFLY EFFECT
Perhaps there is no more appropriate name than Butterfly Compassion Community.
Because what I have witnessed is truly a butterfly effect.
A single blanket becomes warmth.
Warmth becomes comfort.
Comfort becomes sleep.
Sleep improves wellbeing.
Wellbeing improves resilience.
Resilience creates hope.
Hope creates possibility.
Possibility creates change.
A birthday gift becomes a childhood memory.
A bed becomes rest.
A cot becomes safe.
A pack becomes dignity.
A school bag becomes confidence.
A sports pack becomes a belonging.
A pair of shoes becomes participation.
A blanket becomes survival.
A community becomes family.
And every single one of those moments creates ripples far beyond what any of us can see.
🦋💜 FOR EVERY VOLUNTEER
There are many people who will never know your names.
But they know your kindness.
To every volunteer:
Thank you.
To every donor:
Thank you.
To every person sorting clothing:
Thank you.
To every person folding linen:
Thank you.
To every person collecting donations:
Thank you.
To every person packing boxes:
Thank you.
To every person answering emails:
Thank you.
To every committee member.
To every coordinator.
To every supporter.
To every person who contributes to this kaupapa.
Please know:
You are changing lives.
Not metaphorically.
Literally.
You are changing lives.
🦋💜 A MODEL OF TRUE COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIP
In social services, we often talk about collaboration.
We often talk about partnerships.
We often talk about collective impact.
But Butterfly Compassion Community is one of the rare organisations that genuinely embodies all three.
Our partnership has never felt transactional.
It has always felt relational.
Built on trust.
Built on shared values.
Built on mutual respect.
Built on a common belief that nobody should face hardship alone.
The reality is that the support I have been able to provide as a social worker has been significantly strengthened because Butterfly Compassion Community exists.
You have amplified my ability to support whānau.
You have strengthened outcomes.
You have filled gaps.
You have provided resources where resources did not exist.
You have helped turn crises into opportunities for healing.
You have helped turn despair into hope.
You have helped turn survival into progress.
And for that, I will always be grateful.
🦋💜 YOU REPRESENT THE BEST OF US
When people ask me what community looks like, I think of Butterfly Compassion Community.
Not because of the donations.
Not because of the resources.
Not because of the impressive number of people supported.
But because of the values you embody.
Aroha.
Manaakitanga.
Whanaungatanga.
Empathy.
Dignity.
Compassion.
Generosity.
Service.
Hope.
These are not just words for you.
They are practices.
They are actions.
They are values you live every day.
🦋💜 YOUR LEGACY
One day, the blankets will wear out.
The beds will eventually be replaced.
The clothing will be outgrown.
The school supplies will be used.
The birthday gifts will age.
The nappies will be gone.
The boxes will be unpacked.
The household items will be worn from use.
But the impact will remain.
Because people never forget how they were treated.
People never forget being cared for.
People never forget the moment somebody helped when life felt impossible.
People never forget compassion.
And that is the legacy Butterfly Compassion Community is building.
A legacy not measured in donations.
But measured in transformed lives.
🦋💜 FINAL WORDS
If I could leave you with just one message, it would be this:
Please never underestimate the significance of what you do.
There are families sleeping warmer because of you.
Children smiling because of you.
Parents breathing easier because of you.
Rangatahi believing in themselves because of you.
Grandparents feeling supported because of you.
Whānau feeling less alone because of you.
Communities stronger because of you.
Lives changed because of you.
From myself.
From ACROSS Te Kotahitanga o te Wairua.
From every whānau I have had the privilege of supporting alongside you.
From every tamaiti.
Every rangatahi.
Every māmā.
Every pāpā.
Every nanny.
Every koro.
Every person whose life has been touched by your generosity.
Thank you.
Thank you for your compassion.
Thank you for your generosity.
Thank you for your humanity.
Thank you for your aroha.
Thank you for your partnership.
Thank you for your belief in people.
Thank you for consistently showing our community what kindness in action looks like.
And thank you for helping countless whānau find their wings when life had clipped them.
As your name so beautifully represents.
You have helped create transformation.
You have helped people emerge from some of life’s hardest seasons with renewed hope, renewed dignity, and renewed belief that they matter.
That is extraordinary.
That is sacred.
And that is something worth celebrating.
With immeasurable gratitude, profound respect, deep admiration, and endless aroha,
